C + 8 : Dubrovnik - 1'000 Years of History

Today is handover day in Dubrovnik. Captain Mustafa and his team prepare the Dragonfly for next week, scrubbing every inch of the boat and stocking it with new supplies like fresh fruits, veggies, Aperol Spritz (!) and Grk (my favourite white wine from Korcula)

Zaton Bay, our logistic base today To get out of the way, we visit Dubrovnik and hired Ivan, a tour guide with a PhD in history. The two hours with him were fascinating. He whisked us thru 1’000 years of history as if he was talking about a sports event. His PhD thesis on Croatian migrant workers in Germany must have helped. He was an expert on the war in 1991.

The main street of Dubrovnik was a former channel separating

the rocky island from the mainland

One of Dubrovnik’s two main fountains which are fed by

a sub-terranean aquaduct from sources miles away

View on Ragusa’s Financial Center which gave the town its coat of arms -

horizontal red and silver (!) stripes

Classical colonades at the Rector’s residence (the Rector ruled for one month only) - reminding people of the principles of the Roman Republic before Caesar

The fortified medieval harbour of Dubrovnik provided shelter in bad weather and against bad people At 4 pm we were back at Zaton and ready for the next leg. Team 2 was onboard. Team 1 on their way home. We wanted to get some miles done today in order to reduce sailing time tomorrow - Korcula, Marco Polo's birthplace, was Sunday's destination.

The beautiful mountains of the Dalmatian coast north of Dubrovnik

And we met by chance Maske, our second boat for week 3, on the way to our anchor place for tonight - next week she will be ours!

Mljet Polace, the small harbour we stay tonight - dinner will be a giant seabass baked in salt
