A - 16 : Venetian Commercial Ships

Whilst the Venetian Galleys are well know (A - 18), fewer people know that most traded goods were shipped on traditional ships without oars but latin sails. Bulky goods like cotton, Damascus steel, sugar or coffee required more storage space than available on a galley.

Of course, these slow ships were easy prey for the North-African pirates which were allied with the Ottoman Turks - many of them became later in their career famous Turkish Admirals. These ships with their valuable cargo thus needed around the clock protection by war galleys and had to call on ports every night to be protected by the guns of Venetian.
